My Therapeutic Approach

I am not a passive, “sounding board” kind of therapist. I get right to work helping you figure out what you want to improve.

 

What feelings/thoughts/behaviors do you want to change? What are the obstacles that have kept you from being able to make these changes before now?

 

Then we do active work, both in session and in homework assignments. My approach is scientifically based and I focus on building a strong, trusting, caring relationship with clients, helping to empower them to change their environments and self concepts, and to build and utilize their strengths.

I use a variety of evidence based techniques and approaches based on the needs of the client. Some of them are:

  • Positive Psychology,

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) (as well as cognitive behavioral parenting techniques),

  • Clinical Hypnotherapy,

  • Mindfulness,

  • Imago and Non-Violent Communication techniques for relationship counseling.

I provide a supportive environment for clients in alternative sexual/relationship communities such as the LGBTQQAI+, polyamorous, kink, BDSM, swinger communities and people who do sex-work and adult film work.

I grew up in very challenging circumstances. I was a kid with behavioral and attitude problems. I demonstrated clear symptoms of Complex PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

 

I was haunted by debilitating flashbacks, fears, worries, and a host of self-destructive behaviors. My external, surly negativity was just an mirror of my brutally self-critical inner voice.

 

By the time I was a young adult I had a life starting at nowhere and going downhill fast. I was living in poverty and barely functional. I had little access to professional therapy; I needed more. So I joined support groups and began reading every self-help and psychology book I could access.

 

It was slow, but I made steady progress. I eventually went to college and graduate school, had a career, and established a healthy, happy relationship. Eventually I could and did access the help of professional therapists (a lot!)

I waited in becoming a therapist because I wanted to heal my issues first. 

In my 40s, I returned to school. In 2012 I earned my Masters in Social Work from UGA. I now have 11 years of direct experience working with clients and over 30 years experience working on myself.

​The result is, that as a therapist, I often know first hand the pain you’re experiencing. And I want to get you relief from those symptoms as quickly as possible in a responsible manner that moves you in the direction of long term healing and mental/emotional health.
